The capital of Provence is a stunning city steeped in history, as well as being a spa town. A haven for lovers of impressionist landscapes, fields of lavender and public fountains - it's got more than 40 of them -
Aix-en-Provence is around 3 hours from Paris by train and perfect for a short break.
- Passing through? Fine architecture will surround you, but for a really satisfying experience, take a stroll along the Cours Mirabeau where you'll see stylish 17th-century houses and the childhood home of artist Paul Cézanne.
- Staying a while? Visit the Sainte-Baume mountain range. A walk through lush forests, believed sacred by the Druids, will take you up to the cave of Mary Magdalena, the patron saint of Provence.
- The inside track... Treat yourself to a visit to the Sextius Baths. Built on the site of an ancient Roman thermal bath, this spa once boasted Winston Churchill and Pablo Picasso as regulars. Choices include mud cures, energy balancing and leg toning sessions.
