Toulouse“Pink at dawn, red at noon and mauve at dusk…” is how the French often describe the charming rose-brick Old Town of Toulouse. As France's fourth largest metropolis, vibrant University City and birthplace of aeronautical tourism, La ‘Ville Rose' has many hidden delights to uncover.

A strong yet gentle town, Toulouse embodies the perfect blend of old tradition and youthful innovation. From ancient architectural gems such as the magnificent 12 th century Romanesque church of Basilique de St-Sernin , the Gothic Eglise des Jacobins and the Place du Capitole , to the futuristic space park, the Cité de l'Espace and the Airbus site at Clément Ader hall, where the now-retired Concorde was born. This unique combination of youth and experience, offering something for everyone, is where the real charm of Toulouse lies.

Situated in close proximity to Spain, Toulouse inherits much of the laid back ambiance of Southern Europe. However, as the second biggest university hotspot in France, the students also contribute greatly to the vibrant, young and carefree atmosphere of the city. Home to over 110,000 students from the Université des Sciences Sociales , the vocal student population help to keep the prices down in the numerous cafés, bars and restaurants around town, and also ensure that there is always something going on.

Another hidden treasure of this fascinating city is its artistic prowess. For real art lovers, there are two must-sees when in Toulouse. Firstly, the Musée des Augustins , set in the church and chapter houses of the Augustins convent in the centre of the city, which is well-known for its wonderful collection of Romanesque and Gothic sculptures, as well as an inspiring display of 19 th Century French painting. And secondly, Les Abattoirs , opened in the year 2000, which was transformed from an old municipal slaughterhouse to a focal point for modern and contemporary art and is often the venue for many temporary exhibitions.

From cultural, artistic and architectural jewels, to what every girl loves…shopping! Toulouse really is a city best seen by foot. Stroll through the dusty 18 th and 19 th century cobble stoned boulevards of the rose-tinted Old Town, which are lined with traditional boutiques, internationally renowned shops and a handful of department stores to suit every taste. The main network of shopping lanes is situated around the Place du Capitole , the heart and soul of Toulouse and home to the Town Hall and Theatre National du Capitole . It is also the perfect place to while away the afternoon, whilst soaking up the warm southern sun and doing a spot of ‘people watching'.

As the capital of the Midi-Pyrenees, the largest region in France, Toulouse offers much more to see in its surrounding areas should you want to explore a little further. The fairytale medieval fortress town of Carcassonne is only 50 minutes away by TGV and is well worth a visit. As is the seaside town of Beziers, famous for bullfighting and rugby, only an hour and a half away by train.
